The Art of Block Printing
Block printing is a technique that involves printing patterns using engraved wooden blocks. Although hand block printing is a time-consuming process, it produces highly artistic results that are impossible to achieve through other methods. Each design requires mastery - from carving wood blocks to aligning each stamp precisely to create seamless, flowing patterns. The resulting textiles are living pieces of heritage, with slight variations in print and color add to their unique charm.
Block printing originated in China around the 3rd century CE. It was one of the earliest methods used for printing on textiles and paper. The technique later spread to India, Japan, and other parts of Asia, where it evolved into various traditional styles. In India, the art of block printing was perfected, with Indian craftsmen elevating it into a world-renowned tradition known for its intricate and multi-colored patterns.
- Block Carving process begins with a design, drawn on paper and hand-carved into Sheesham wood blocks, approximately 18-25 cm across. Each color in a print requires a separate block. The first layer, the 'gud' or base color, is stamped first, followed by the intricate outline block ('rekh') and finally the fill block ('datta'). To master this technique requires years of apprenticeship.
- Once the blocks are ready, the master printer prepares AZO-free, eco-friendly synthetic colors that are used in Sanganer printing. These colors are poured into wooden trays lined with a handmade mesh, ensuring an even spread. The printer stamps the block in the color tray each time, then stamps the block onto the fabric creating a repeat pattern.
- Each pattern is stamped onto the fabric color by color, requiring skill and patience. The printing master precisely aligns each block during the process, using the carved ‘guide’ on the left edge as a reference. Each printer's unique style contributes to a distinctive ‘signature’ look.
